Pediatric Dehydration and Gastroenteritis - Emergency Guatemala
Urgent management of dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea
Dehydration can be dangerous in young children and progresses rapidly. With Emergency Medicine training, I assess the degree of dehydration, identify the cause, and determine if your child needs urgent IV hydration or can be managed with oral rehydration solution at home.
⚠️ Signs of dehydration requiring urgent care
Hasn’t urinated in more than 8 hours (diaper completely dry)
Very dry mouth and tongue, no saliva
Sunken eyes, crying without tears
Sunken fontanel (soft spot) in babies
Very lethargic, confused, or won’t wake up well
Persistent vomiting that won’t allow drinking fluids
⚡ Urgent evaluation at hospitals
Dehydration requires rapid assessment
Gastroenteritis (diarrhea and vomiting) is very common in children, but can progress to dangerous dehydration if not managed appropriately. As a pediatric emergency physician from Hospital Infantil de México, I can clinically assess the degree of dehydration using objective signs, identify the cause (viral, bacterial, parasitic), and decide if your child needs IV rehydration in hospital or can be managed with oral rehydration solution at home with close follow-up.
Why evaluate dehydration with Dr. Sandy?
Expert in Clinical Assessment
Training from Hospital Infantil de México in hydration status assessment. I can determine degree of dehydration (mild, moderate, severe) using clinical signs without need for complex tests in most cases.
Accurate Management Decision
I know exactly when a child can be managed with oral rehydration solution at home with follow-up versus when they need urgent hospitalization with IV hydration. I don’t hospitalize unnecessarily but don’t underestimate either.
Cause Identification
I determine if it’s simple viral gastroenteritis (80-90%, doesn’t require antibiotics) or if tests and antibiotics are needed for bacterial or parasitic infection. I avoid unnecessary antibiotics.
Complication Prevention
Quick action prevents progression to hypovolemic shock (circulatory collapse) and acute kidney failure from untreated severe dehydration. My emergency training allows me to anticipate complications.
