Pediatric Emergency Ultrasound in Guatemala

Critical ultrasound allows me to see what’s happening immediately during emergencies. Rapid assessment of abdomen, chest, and other systems to make urgent decisions about your child’s treatment without waiting for scheduled studies.
When is emergency ultrasound needed?
Severe acute abdominal pain requiring urgent diagnosis
Suspected appendicitis, bowel obstruction, or intussusception
Respiratory distress with suspected pleural effusion
Abdominal trauma to rule out internal bleeding
Rapid evaluation of abdominal organs in emergencies
⚡ Available during emergency care at hospital
Critical ultrasound accelerates diagnosis in emergencies
Critical or point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a tool that allows specialized physicians to perform ultrasound studies during emergency care, obtaining immediate diagnostic images without waiting for scheduled radiology studies. As a certified critical ultrasonographer, I can quickly assess abdominal conditions (appendicitis, intussusception, free fluid), respiratory conditions (pleural effusion, pneumothorax), and other emergencies. This allows faster and more accurate decisions about treatment or need for urgent surgery.
Why critical ultrasound with Dr. Sandy?
Specialized Certification in Critical Ultrasound
Specific training as critical ultrasonographer - I not only know pediatric emergencies, but can perform and interpret ultrasounds myself during the emergency. This eliminates waiting for available radiologist.
Immediate Diagnosis During Emergency
I perform ultrasound WHILE evaluating your child in emergency - results in minutes, not hours. This accelerates critical decisions about treatment, antibiotics, urgent surgery, or reassurance if no serious findings.
Interpretation in Clinical Context
Since I’m the physician evaluating the patient AND performing the ultrasound, I immediately correlate findings with medical history and physical exam. This gives more accurate diagnoses than isolated studies.
Safe and Non-invasive
Ultrasound doesn’t use radiation (unlike X-rays or CT scan), is completely safe for children of all ages, painless, and can be repeated as many times as necessary without risk.

How does Emergency Ultrasound work?
Quick and non-invasive process for immediate diagnosis during emergency care.
Initial Clinical Assessment
First I take medical history and complete physical exam of your child. This gives me an initial diagnostic hypothesis that I then confirm or rule out with ultrasound. Ultrasound does NOT substitute clinical assessment - it complements it.
Performing the Ultrasound
I place conductive gel on your child’s skin and pass the transducer (probe) over the area to evaluate. It’s completely painless - your child only feels mild pressure from the transducer. Typically takes 5-15 minutes depending on what I’m evaluating. You can be present throughout the study.
Immediate Interpretation
I interpret images IN THE MOMENT while performing the study. No waiting for radiologist report - I see and interpret in real-time myself. This allows immediate decisions about management.
Management Decision and Explanation
Based on ultrasound findings + clinical assessment, I decide next step: medical treatment, need for urgent surgery, additional studies (CT if necessary), or hospitalization for observation. I clearly explain what I found and what it means for your child’s treatment.
