When to go to pediatric emergency?
As a parent, it’s normal to worry when your child gets sick. These are situations where you should seek immediate emergency care:
Fever in young babies
Fever over 100.4°F/38°C in infants under 3 months. Any fever in this age group requires immediate evaluation.
Difficulty breathing
Rapid breathing, chest retractions, wheezing, blue lips or fingers.
Severe dehydration
Persistent vomiting, won’t drink fluids, hasn’t urinated in more than 8 hours, very dry mouth, sunken eyes.
Major trauma
Hard blows to the head, falls from height, loss of consciousness, vomiting after the blow.
Seizures
First seizure, prolonged seizures, or seizures without fever.
Lethargy or confusion
Difficulty waking up, excessive drowsiness, confusion, or behavior very different from usual.
Bleeding
Bleeding that won’t stop, blood in vomit or stool, bruises appearing without cause.
Allergic reactions
Swelling of face, lips, or tongue, difficulty breathing or swallowing, generalized hives.
